A Letter From Our Executive Director

Help us to build a healthier generation!

We greatly appreciate your generous support of WinterKids.  As a member of our exclusive Snowflake Club, you are instrumental in the continued success of our organization. We hope you will continue to be a member of the Snowflake Club with a gift of $1,000 or more.

I know your time is valuable, but I hope you’ll take a moment to read about where we’re going as an organization. Every dollar is precious to WinterKids and we want you to know that your donations are being put to good use and making a difference. We are maximizing our efforts by ensuring our staff and resources are well-matched to meet our goals. We’ve also expanded our volunteer Board of Directors to broaden our areas of expertise and experience.

The WinterKids Passport is our most well-known program. Since 1997, the Passport has introduced tens of thousands of Maine children and their families to winter sports. For the past year, we’ve been researching how best to serve our Passport holders in the future. To that end, we are working towards a new online app version of the Passport with the goal of broadening the appeal of the Passport and growing our user base to get more families outside and active together in the winter.

Our school program is the fastest growing segment of WinterKids, and one of the very best ways to reach kids. The WinterKids Challenge trains teachers to use the WinterKids Guide to Outdoor Active Learning (GOAL), a unique collection of lessons that each include an outdoor, physically active component. The lessons help students develop healthy active habits, and are all aligned to learning standards. For the first time, WinterKids crossed the border into New Hampshire last year, bringing the WinterKids GOAL to early education and elementary teachers in Coos, Belknap and Merrimack counties.

Our events continue to grow as well.  More than 800 people attended our Welcome to Winter Festival in Portland’s Payson Park this past winter. That’s more than double the number of the previous year! The WinterKids Downhill 24 had a massive first year at Sugarloaf. We raised over $222,000, more than the first 3 years combined!

Our success continues to grow, but we need your support to build on our momentum.

Unfortunately, children’s participation in outdoor activity continues to decline as screen time and social media interests increase. WinterKids is working to ensure that the next generation of children lives longer than their parents by getting them outside and staying active.

A Child's Life Forever Changed by WinterKids

Anthony was a 12-year old foster child in search of a positive direction. After 3 years in foster care, he moved in with his aunt and uncle. They loved and cared for him, but Anthony continued to act out at school and struggled with his classwork. Deep down, Anthony was a good kid who just needed a little self-esteem to drive him forward.

Anthony really wanted to try out for the school's ski team, but he didn't have skis and his aunt and uncle couldn't afford them. That's when his aunt found out about the WinterKids George K. Scholarship Fund. Anthony was awarded a season-long loan of ski equipment and hit the slopes. It wasn't easy learning a new sport, but skiing tapped a passion inside him.

Anthony began developing a positive relationship with his school principal, who helped him learn on the green slopes. By the second race of the season, Anthony left the bunny slopes and never looked back. In the classroom, his behavior and school work improved. He began building positive relationships with his peers. At the end of the season, Anthony won the Most Improved Skier Award. His experience through WinterKids gave him the opportunity to strive towards positive goals. Anthony's success helped him build self-esteem, changing every area of his life for the better. Anthony may not know you, but he will be forever grateful for your support during a difficult time in his life.

Please consider a gift of $ ___ this year. Or perhaps, you would prefer our monthly giving option. Your gift of $___ can be deducted from your credit or debit card for just $___ a month!
